Texas bookstores are opening, closing, and relocating

 

ARCHER CITY 

Chip Gaines, of the Magnolia Network and Fixer Upper has bought Booked Up, the bookstore founded by the late Larry McMurtry in 1987 in his hometown. At press time, Gaines's intentions for the bookstore and inventory are unknown.  

 

CORPUS CHRISTI 

New-to-us Black Cat Books celebrated its Grand Opening on August 13, 2022 and is proud to be Corpus Christi’s newest independent bookstore. Located at 1318 S Staples Street, Black Cat Books offers used, new, and rare books at discounted prices. 

 

GREENVILLE 

A New Chapter Bookstore, founded in 2018, is now searching for a buyer. The owners, Bob and Margo Roberts, cited their reason for selling is the difficulty to remain competitive in the literary marketplace.

 

LAREDO 

2nd & Charles, opened in 2017, closed its doors on February 11, 2023. 

 

NEW BRAUNFELS 

The Book Haus plans to close its brick-and-mortar store on March 31, 2023 but will still be present in the community, participating in pop-ups and other events.  They are currently holding a liquidation sale through their scheduled closing date.  

 

PFLUGERVILLE 

The Book Burrow, a new and used bookstore that debuted as an online store and pop-up shop, has taken permanent residence inside the Three Legged Goat, a wine bar in Pflugerville, Community Impact reported.  Book Burrow owner Kelsey Black has a selection of books permanently on display inside the wine bar.  A grand opening celebration for the Book Burrow residence is planned for March 25, 2023.  

 

SELMA 

Horror authors Max Booth III and Lori Michelle are expanding their publishing company, Ghoulish Books, to include a storefront which will primarily stock indie horror titles along with a few gifts and used books. Their publishing company and retail space will share their location, once an official opening date has been set. In the meantime, Ghoulish Books will hold its second annual Ghoulish Book Festival April 14-16 in San Antonio.
